Game Recap

The Mustangs came out swinging early in the the second game of the doubleheader with the St. Helens Lions. In the first inning, with 2 outs senior outfielder, Theo Dover, was hit by a pitch. Dover stole 2nd base and scored the Mustangs first run on a single by senior first baseman, Riley Howard.

The Lions answered back in the bottom of the first. They had 3 hits, but Milwaukie’s junior second baseman, Nathaniel McGowan, and junior shortstop, Keith Doherty, made a clutch double play to keep runners from scoring. With 2 outs the Lions did find the plate when they singled to left field scoring 1 run to tie the game.

In the 2nd inning, Milwaukie’s bats remained hot. Senior catcher, Noah Miller, started the inning off with single. Miller advanced to second on a sac bunt by junior outfielder, Nic Schwada. Doherty then singled to advance Miller to third. Senior pitcher, Cole Roberts then tripled to center field scoring both Miller and Doherty. Dover then homered over the left field fence to give the Mustangs a 5-1 lead.

In the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Lions were threatening to score with bases loaded, but got unlucky when with 2 outs one of their base runners was called out for offensive interference when a ground ball hit him while he was advancing to third.

The Mustangs put 3 more runs on the board in the 7th inning. With bases loaded and two outs senior outfielder, Thaxton Stephens, hit a double to clear the bases scoring Dover, sophomore third baseman, Kaden Middleton and McGowan to take a 8-1 lead.

St Helens plated one more run, and the Mustangs turned an error into the 3rd and final out of the game when Howard tracked down an overthrow at first and gunned down the runner as he advanced to 2nd base to end the game.

Roberts went the distance for the Mustangs getting the win. He pitched 7 innings and had 1 strikeout, 0 walks, and allowed just 1 earned run on 8 hits.

The Mustangs offense racked up 11 hits on the night. Middleton led with 3 hits and Roberts and Miller each had 2 hits.
