Game Recap

The Mustangs hosted the first place, Sandy Pioneers, on a fog filled night. The Pioneers controlled possession in the first half of the game outshooting the Mustangs 9 to 5, but the Mustangs turned that around towards the end of the first half applying pressure in the midfield to win possession of some 50/50 balls and make offensive runs. The first half was scoreless until the 34th minute when Sandy Forward, Marley Salveter, broke free and was able to find the corner of the net to give them a 1-0 lead. The Mustangs didn’t surrender and with just 20 seconds left in the first half, Sophomore Midfielder, Annika Candee, send a beautiful pass to Junior Forward, Katelyn Howard, whose shot was deflected off the top bar and bounced around near the goal before the Sandy goalkeeper secured the ball. It was so close that the crowd thought it was in the goal, but the Mustangs would go in to halftime down 0-1.

The second half started and the Mustangs worked together as a team to hold the Pioneers to just one goal. Junior Goalkeeper, Kinsleigh Edmunds, had some tremendous saves and she got great support from her defenders, Ellie Holmes (junior), Alice Mendez (senior), Santi Hart (sophomore), Chloe Muller (junior) and MacKenzie Ware (freshman). Midfielders, Candee, Yessenia Torres (junior), Irene Estrada (sophomore), MaKenna Presley (sophomore) and Makenna Taylor (sophomore) along with Howard worked tirelessly to maintain possession of the ball and give the Mustangs a chance to score. The Mustangs did just that in the 67th minute of the game Presley sent up a ball about 30 yards out that sailed over the Sandy goalkeeper to tie up the game 1-1.

The Sandy offense tried to answer just minutes later, when Salveter sent a ball to the goal and Edmunds deflected the ball going to the ground, and Hart and Candee came in with a heroic save to keep the game tied 1-1. The Mustangs had chances to go ahead, but were unable to find the net, but all of their hard work paid off and they got the much needed draw to remain in 5th place. Coach Kent McCarty said, “They did a fantastic job. We played solid team soccer and it was a great way to send out our only senior.”

The Mustangs end their regular play next Tuesday, October 25, at Wilsonville High School to take on the 4th place Wildcats.
