Milwaukie High School
The Milwaukie Mustangs hosted Central High School and kept their winning streak going with their 6th consecutive win.
Milwaukie applied pressure with their first possession and never let up. They got their first score of the game on an own goal when the ball was deflected off of a Central defender giving the Mustangs their first goal of the night in the 13th minute of the game. Six different Mustangs added to that score in the first half. Junior midfielder, Annika Candee, scored on a through ball from senior forward, Katelyn Howard, in the 15th minute of the game. Candee had a shot blocked and Howard was there to put it in the net for the 3rd goal of the game giving the Mustangs a 3-0 lead. The scoring didn’t stop there. Senior midfielder, Yesenia Torres scored in the 31st minute of the game. Senior midfielder, Ellie Holmes, scored the 5th goal on an assist by sophomore midfielder, Maddie Miller, and just a minute later sophomore midfielder, Kiersten Charron, scored her first varsity goal on a pass from Howard giving the Mustangs a 6-0 lead. The final goal of the half came from sophomore midfielder, Asha Sanders, and Howard was credited with the assist which was her third of the half. Central had 3 shots on goal in the first half and found it difficult to get the ball past the Mustangs strong midfield.
The second half, scoring started in the 47th minute of the game when Holmes found the back of the net for her second goal of the night and Howard’s 4th assist. The second half looked primarily like a game of keep away and the Mustangs worked on their passing game. Central had very few scoring opportunities. Their best chances were from corner kicks which were no match for senior goalkeeper, Kinsleigh Edmunds, who made the saves look effortless. In the last 4 minutes of the game the Mustangs added 2 more goals to the board on goals from Charron and Sanders.
The midfielders: Holmes, Santi Hart (junior), Makenna Taylor (junior), Charron, Torres, Miller and Irene Estrada (sophomore) gave up very few balls. On the few balls that did get through, the defense lead by senior center back, Noelani McGowan, kept possession of the ball and gave the Mustangs many scoring opportunities. Defenders: Chloe Muller (senior), Deidre Bowdoin (senior), Mackenzie Ware (sophomore) did an excellent job assisting Edmunds who recorded her 6th shutout of the season with a final score of 10-0.
The Mustangs start league next Thursday, September 28, when they travel to Hillsboro to take on the Spartans at 5pm.
