Game Recap

The Mustangs traveled to Hillsboro High School to take on the Spartans for the first league game of the season.

The Mustangs started off a little slow giving up control of the ball, but then settled in to win possession and create scoring chances. Both teams did a good just of keeping the ball in the middle of the field limiting scoring opportunities. The Spartans had 6 shots on goal to the Mustangs 5 shots in the first half and senior goalkeeper, Kinsleigh Edmunds, had 4 saves including a bullet that rolled up her body before she grabbed it keeping the game scoreless going into halftime.

The Spartans started with the ball in the second half, but it didn’t take long for the Mustangs to gain control and senior midfielder, Ellie Holmes, sent a beautiful pass in front of the goal and junior midfielder, Asha Sanders, put it in the net giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute of the game.

The Mustangs did a good job of defending the Spartans attack on the back line, which was led by senior defender, Noelani McGowan, who played a great game. The Mustangs had several scoring opportunities, but couldn’t find the back of the net. They out shot the Spartans 11 to 5 in the second half. Spartans goal keeper , Addison Rinck, did a great job of cutting off the angle and had some good saves.

With just 4 minutes left in the game, a free kick was awarded to Hillsboro, just outside of the 18 yard line. Spartans senior midfielder, Madison Ellsworth, kicked the ball in the top of the net just under the post out of the reach of Edmunds to tie the game 1-1. That was the first goal Edmunds has allowed in 7 games, and there was just no way to defend Ellsworth’s shot.

The Mustangs tried to find the back of the net a few more times, but wasn’t able to and the gamed ended in a 1-1 draw. Edmunds had an impressive 8 saves on the night. This was the best finish the Mustangs have had against the Spartans.

The Mustangs head to Rex Putnam (0-1, 2-4) on Tuesday, October 3rd at 7pm.
