Milwaukie High School
Rex Putnam High School
The Mustangs played their cross town rival the, Putnam Kingsmen, for their second league game of the season.
Putnam controlled possession for the first few minutes of the game, but that changed as the Mustangs settled in to control the ball and use their passing game to their advantage. Senior midfielder, Ellie Holmes, was the first to find the net for the Mustangs on a rebound shot giving the Mustangs a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute of the game. The Kingsmen really couldn’t get anything going offensively because the Milwaukie midfield was strong keeping possession and creating scoring opportunities. In the 21st minute, the Mustangs added another goal when sophomore midfielder, Irene Estrada, sent a through ball to junior midfielder, MaKenna Presley who scored to give Milwaukie a 2-0 lead. The 3rd and final goal of the half came just 3 minutes later when senior forward, Katelyn Howard set up a beautiful pass to Estrada who out ran Putnam’s defense to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
The Kingsmen were the first to find the net in the second half when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 46th minute the game. Senior goal keeper, Kinsleigh Edmunds, dove the right way and got a hand on the ball, but couldn’t make the save and that gave Putnam their first and only goal of the night. The Mustangs weren’t done scoring. In the 56th minute Estrada outplayed the keeper and scored her 2nd goal of the night on a pass from Howard who had her 2nd assist of the game. The Mustangs up 4-1 kept applying pressure to the Kingsmen. Putnam had scoring opportunities, but were really no match for Edmunds and the Mustangs defense.
In the 64th minute of the game, junior midfielder, Asha Sanders was fouled in the box. Howard scored the 5th goal of the game on the penalty kick giving the Mustangs a 5-1 lead. Milwaukie kept applying pressure and were able to add one more goal when, sophomore midfielder, Kiersten Charron scored on a cross from junior midfielder, Makenna Taylor in the 75th minute of the game.
Edmunds had 9 saves and the Mustangs dominated the Kingsmen to remain undefeated with a 7-0-1 overall record. This is the second year in a row that the Mustangs defeated the Kingsmen who suffered their second consecutive loss in league giving them an 0-2 league record and 2-5 overall.
