Last week MHS XC had the opportunity to meet and hear from MHS XC Royalty, Mark Hiefield. Coach Zumwalt invited Mark to come talk with the team, share his stories and memories of running XC at Milwaukie back in ’69. Mark’s outstanding resume includes 2nd place state finish in both XC (2.5 miles in 11:34) and track (2 miles in 9:02). Mark spent about 20 minutes with the team talking about his races – he had the opportunity to race against spectacular competition including Steve Roland “Pre” Prefontaine. He shared about training; 6 miles every morning and then practice after school, repeats up Theisen hill, 20X440 @ 60 with 440 jog between. A STUDENT-athlete asked how he dealt with the pressure of races he said, “I made my practices so hard my race days seemed easy!”
Running is all about community and Mark proves that. Mark, we look forward to having you any time and yes you are more than welcome to come and share with MHS Track!
